I am so grateful to have been a student in Mr. Sullivan's art class at Ridgedale School (1981-1983). I recently found the painting I wanted to try to copy in his class. I wasn't the greatest artist, but he always encouraged us to use our imagination and do our best. Rest in peace, Sully. You were one of a kind!

Our three sons were all fortunate enough to have had "Sully" as their art teacher and basketball coach during their years at Ridgedale Middle School. He was an educator who truly made a difference their lives, a teacher who earned the respect of his students simply by being himself--a kind, creative and happy man who instinctively knew how to relate to and bring out the best in his students, be it in the art room, on the basketball court or the softball field.
During chance encounters with Coach Sullivan years after our sons had graduated from RMS, he never failed to inquire about them and display a genuine interest in their current activities.
Our family is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Gene Sullivan; he was one of those special teachers who you never forget.
Our sincere condolences to the Sullivan family.

I met Gene at PRM years ago. We would always talk about our bands and music. One of the most fun nights was when I went to hear his band and I sat In with them. We would talk about music on Facebook and post musical videos of our bands with comments. When we weren’t talking about music, he would tell me about his family. Gene loved his family and spoke highly of them. The students at our school knew how great Mr. Sullivan was. If there had to be a substitute, they were so happy to have him be there. Gene made a tremendous impact on everyone he met. That’s just who he was. I know I will miss him, his stories, his music, and his kindness. I will be keeping all of you in my prayers.

Jean was missed at PRM. When the pandemic started, Jean's presence was sorely missed. We all had hoped we would work together again someday soon. One thing that will be missed is all of his wisdom, inspiring quotes and his humor. As a fellow drummer, Jean shared the best quote that I will keep with me until we jam in the heavens...."You Don't Stop Drumming Because You Got Old, You Got Old Because You Stopped Drumming." Jean was the best example of humankind, with an emphasis on kind!! Rest in piece my fellow teacher, you impacted so many kids and adults alike, a teacher long after he wrapped up his career. Thank you for blessing my life with your presence!

It is with tremendous sadness that I write this tribute to Gene Sullivan. Gene taught me to play rudimentary drums in 1970 for Harmony Senior Drum Corps. Teaching came easy to Gene as he was very patient with us and we learned to play on a 2"x10" board on sawhorses in the basement of the Harmony Fire Station on Boonton Ave. Gene taught us to read music and play together as one. I respected and admired Gene and I saw him again in 2014 and enjoyed reminiscing about the parades we marched in and the Harmony in Motion shows we saw each year during Labor Day weekend. I will always have very fond memories of Gene as a teacher and a role model. Rest in peace Gene, you will be greatly missed and always remembered by all of your HSDC Alumni family.

My first memory of Gene was as the outstanding drummer for the band “care”. I then had the distinct pleasure of playing with Gene in the band “Sullivan County”. More than just a great drummer, I will always remember Gene’s great heart, warmth, wit, joke and most importantly our friendship. Ginny was also always there for Sullivan County which I always will cherish. Thank you Gene

I'm so thankful for the opportunity to know Gene in so many different ways. As a kid, he was always one of "the cool dads" when I'd be hanging out with Kevin. After my own dad died, he made sure to look out for me as a surrogate father. (I'll always remember staying with him and his family at the shore around this time. He made sure I was just another member of the family.) In college, he helped me grow up, putting his name on the apartment I shared with Kevin, giving us the opportunity to do some maturing with the safety of knowing that he had our back if we ended up not being able to handle things ourselves. When I started teaching in Kinnelon and I started seeing Mr. Sullivan in the halls as a substitute, it was tough to start calling him "Gene" as a colleague (and I don't think I ever really did), but it was a pleasure to joke with him in the halls, request him to watch my classes when he was out, catch up on the family and see pictures of the grandkids, or hear about the next gig he'd be playing. And going to see this guy play? Forget about it.
And writing all of this out, I'm really realizing how much of him--how all of these wonderful qualities--are evident in his whole family. The joy. The art. The kindness. The music. The humor. The laughter. The wisdom. The compassion. The love.
You better believe I miss him. But I just have to look at that family of his to see how much he's still here.

We send our deepest regards and sympathy. Gene and I would share and update our connection to students who went from FPk to HP when we saw each other at Sabeys in the summer . He taught my nieces and I have memories of sitting with Ginny on main beach when our kids were young. I have a few clay pieces of his that I purchased many years ago and they remain favorites. We are so sorry to hear of his loss
Peace and blessings during this time ,

Gene probably never realized how much he helped me through my first few years as a teacher in Kinnelon. A great friend and confidante, who always had advice when I needed it. Going out to watch him play the drums on a Friday night was always a treat. I can only hope to find something one day that brings me as much joy as music seemed to bring to him. Forever thankful to him. May he rest in peace.

There are no words that can express the sadness that Craig and I felt after we spoke with Ginny and learned of Gene's sudden passing. Although we've been separated by many miles for a long time now, those miles never erased the love and memories we shared for 45 years as couples first, and then as families, each of us having 2 sons. The laughs we shared were countless, not to mention vacations, our traditional New Year's Eve lobster and champagne dinners, kid's birthday parties, gathering to watch Sullivan County play on weekends, Ginny and I acting like Lucy and Ethel as we tried to undertake recipes that were way over our heads! I could go on and on. Gene never let me forget when I spent hours baking his red velvet birthday cake only to drop it on the garage floor; he's ribbed me about that for the last 30+ years. In those many years, we shared tears as well, as we all suffered losses of family members, including babies, but the one constant was that we could depend on each other and this many years later, we still love and miss the Sullivan family and our lives were much richer for having the privilege of calling them our friends. Rest in peace, Gene, knowing how much you were loved and how much happiness you brought to everyone who was blessed enough to know you. We on earth lost a great treasure, but heaven has gained an artistically and musically gifted angel with one hell of a sense of humor! Keep them laughing up there, Sully, and please give my Mom a hug for me!

Mr.Sull you were the kindest most generous person I had the pleasure of knowing. You made middle school tolerable and Art Class so enjoyable, and this is coming from a girl who can't even draw a stick figure. A great coach and mentor. I loved reconnecting with you on FB, we all did. Im so happy you and your band mates played at our Ridgedale Jr. High School "reunion" in 2019. I always looked forward to your posts and your comments on mine. I loved your fairy tale love story with your Ginny. Rest in peace, until we meet again...

Goodness, what to say. You married my best friend in the whole world and I know how happy she was with you. I was a very proud part of your wedding party and your lives until Russ and I moved to Arizona. I’ll never forget those great times and early morning breakfasts after the band was done playing. You truly were one-of-a-kind Gene and I am happy we were friends. You made my life happier for knowing you and knowing how happy Ginny was with you. Gone way too soon. Godspeed my friend. I’m sorry I didn’t get to see you again.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Sully's passing. I was a student of his at RMS 15 years ago and he still stands out as one of the best teachers I've ever had. He was gentle, soft-spoken, yet enthusiastic and passionate. I still have all of my projects from his class in a folder, along with a photo of us on the last day of school. I remember in my 8th-grade year, he selected a small handful of students to submit artwork and attend the Morris County Arts Festival. We both knew that I wasn't the best artist and my artwork definitely didn't qualify to compete at the county level. However, Mr. Sully looked past all that, knew how much I loved his class and the fun of making art, and let me go with him and the other students. I will never forget his big, kind heart. I am now an educator myself, and Mr. Sully's legacy will continue to live on as I treat my students with the same amount of kindness, respect, and passion that he showed to me and the other students at RMS.
