Dudy Schindler

Dudy Leopoldine Schindler, retired High School librarian, died on April 5, 2018 at the age of 83. She had been active in her professional society since 1984?  

Born in Kufstein, Austria, she was raised there by her American father and German mother, enduring the hardships of war and occupation. Dudy studied at the University of Vienna. There she met her husband Maximilian, and they decided to accept his invitation as a research scientist for the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, OH, where the couple and their two sons lived 1957/58. After Max’s contract expired, he accepted an offer at RCA’s Harrison facility and the family settled in Morris Township.

After a third boy was born in 1963, they moved to a more rural environment, Boonton Township, where the parents spent the rest of their lives. Dudy acquired a Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences at Rutgers University; 1974 she became school librarian at Boonton High School, a position she held until retirement in 1998 – the longest anyone held this position.

At the time Dudy also became active in the Educational Media Association, first as editor for the Educational Media Association. 1981 she was one of the first in New Jersey to introduce computers and 1984 on-line information retrieval in a school library. 1987 Boonton High’s library became one of the first in New Jersey to be automated, and Dudy’s assistance was often sought by other districts. Her network permitted different sites to access the library’s resources, by now a familiar concept. Dudy became an adjunct professor at Rutgers, and taught courses in the new library technologies from 1988 to 1994.

For recreation, Dudy and her husband enjoyed hiking, swimming, skiing, and traveling much of the world – usually including their beloved Tyrol. After retirement Dudy devoted herself to her 9 grandchildren, and arranging European trips for her American friends.

Dudy Schindler is survived by her husband, Dr. Max Schindler and her sons Dr. Chris Schindler, professor at Columbia University and living in Rockville Center, NY. Manfred, an engineering consultant, in Newton, MA; and Norbert, system consultant, in Vienna, Austria; her grandchildren Anna, Jennifer, Eric, Loretta, Christine, Greta, Joseph, Martin and Philip; her great-grandson Nathan and her sister Maria Curry of Harrington Park, NJ

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 2:30 PM, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 910 Birch Street, Boonton, NJ. . Dangler, Lewis and Carey Funeral Home, 312 W. Main Street, Boonton, NJ 07005, are entrusted with funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Emilie Hammond Wildflower Trail c/o The Rockaway Valley Garden Club, PO Box 413, Boonton, NJ 07005. The Wildflower Trail is in the Tourne Park in Boonton and was one of Dudy's passions.
